Firstly, we hear from the founder of Headfudge, Heather – here is her selection of favourite summer tunes and the reasons that they are close to her heart!
01. Van Morrisson - Brown Eyed Girl
This is my ultimate summer memory song… it’s a special song close to my heart as it was the soundtrack of the first road trip me and my dad took together. He flew me to Florida to swim with dolphins for the first time when I was 20, and every single 'tiki bar' we walked into on our journey down the Florida Keys, this song was being played - it was like a sign. I remember in particular, this dazzling happy and smiley Rasta man called Ronnie, playing it as we walked into our pool bar and grinning at me from ear to ear.
02. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside
My first Skydive!! This track will forever be ingrained in my mind as the soundtrack to the scariest thing I’ve ever done!! Me and my best mate backpacked to New Zealand and Australia when we were about 25 and we did a 15,000ft skydive over Lake Wanaka and Mount Cook. This song was being played and was on the video of my jump. I can still feel the adrenaline pumping now!! The second jump in OZ was much less scary and I was so excited I don’t even remember what was playing haha!
03. Paul Weller - Broken Stones
Ahh, love this song. It just makes me feel so happy and uplifted. I remember when I first discovered it, and was cruising around the New Forest on one of my sunset drives, and I just kept driving for hours playing this over again and singing at the top of my voice, with a content smile on my face. It’s also one of the first songs I tried to learn to play on guitar… still learning!!! :)
04. Bob Marley - Three Little Birds
Can’t not have Bob on my list - I’ve loved Bob Marley since I was about 12 years old. He has been the soundtrack to many years of my life and many special memories. Reggae music is in my blood and evokes instant calm and happy feelings in me. I remember my parents being very concerned that I had a poster of this Rasta man on my wall when all my friends had posters of puppies or boy bands! When Sienna was a tiny baby, I used to rock her to sleep singing Three Little Birds to her every night - although I think I was singing the lyrics more to myself!!
05. Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Does this need an explanation? What a classic tune. So damn funky - I bet anyone to say it doesn’t make them move and feel happy when it’s on!! Reminds me of summer BBQ’s at my Dad’s house and dancing around the garden to this, cold beer in hand and everyone feeling good.
06. Jason Mraz - I’m Yours
Again, just such a happy happy tune. Some might call it cheesy, but I love it - I remember the summer it came out and I was on holiday on my own in Turkey. The friends I met out there also loved it and we had many a drunken night singing and dancing like nutters to this song!!
07. PM Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss
Classic 90’s tune. What an awesome one too… this reminds me of being young and carefree and summers without a care in the world. Time machine anyone??!
08. Sonique - It Feels So Good
Another holiday memory this one - I was in Kos in Greece with a friend when I was about 22. The holiday its self was very much a blur and was mostly lived for the nights dancing and having fun - days were for sleeping in the sun and topping up the tan. This song had just come out in the charts and was massive over in Greece - I can remember clear as yesterday feeling elated, dancing on the bar with my friend, warm breeze flowing through the open roof and loads of happy people below us all going mental to this tune!!
09. David Gray - Sail Away
White Ladder was the album which me and my dad listened to on our road trip down to the keys… happy memories of me and Dad boogieing down the 7 mile bridge in our big American Buick, me with feet out the window, listening to Sail Away just after I’d had my first Dolphin swim, elated tears of joy in my eyes! Very special memories.
10. Paul Van Dyke - For An Angel
What a corker! Remember bombing around in my 1st car during the summer this came out, blaring out the speakers and feeling on top of the world!! Love the euphoric feeling everyone had dancing to this track. It also reminds me of a holiday with my friend in Gran Canaria, asking the DJ to play this for us in the club… we soon got everyone up dancing with us!! Good times.
Secondly we get our Social Media & Sales Guru’s input on her favourite summer ear candy –
01. Roger Sanchez – Another Chance
I love this song – it reminds me of care-free summers in my early 20’s before mortgages and children. I used to turn this up loudly and play it with my bedroom windows open wide, hoping to impress the boy across the road, cleaning his car, with my musical taste! #cringe
02. Bob Marley – Could You Be Loved
This song reminds me of my first (and only!) girly holiday with my bestie to Santorini. Laying on the beach sipping pina colada’s with Bob playing in the background.
03. The Fratellis – Chelsea Dagger
Reminds me of driving into Croyde, in Devon, surf boards (precariously!) strapped to the roof, windows open, with my now hubby Tom. The sun shining, the smell of sea air filling our nostrils – heaven – en route to a weekend in the surf.
04. Chicane – Poppiholla
I don’t really have a memory for this song I just feel instantly uplifted when I hear it. It seems to send me to a warm, sunny place with smiley happy people around me!
05. The Killers – Mr Brightside
My ultimate favourite song EVER! I will never forget watching The Killers from the side of the stage early on in their career at The Guildhall in Southampton just after they released Hot Fuss. That is when my love/obsession for them was born.
06. No Letting Go – Wayne Wonder
This reminds me of going out dancing in Bournemouth with my friends, young, carefree without a care in the world! My best friend and I always used to wear a red trilby hat - it was like our trademark!
07. The Fray – How To Save a Life
This song had just been released when my hubby and I met so was ‘our song’ at the time – he copied the album onto a CD for me and bought it down to me on our first date back in the summer of 2007 – who says romance is dead?!
08. All Saints – Pure Shores
This song reminds me of the film ‘The Beach’ which instantly sends me to a deserted island in Thailand!
09. Bobby Valentino – Slow Down
Sends me back to another summer spent on the beach with good friends when I lived in Bournemouth. Driving to the beach, windows down, wind in our hair, music up loudly.. can I borrow a day from way back then please?!
10. Annie Lennox – Why
I was only 8 when my mum had this album playing all the time when we were kids. Reminds me of dancing around the lounge with her singing at the tops of our lungs during our summer holidays. #happinessencapsulated
